"It's over" for Yogi Berra
On September 22, at the age of 90, Yogi Berra passed away leaving behind a legacy known nationwide. He was a Hall of Famer and one of baseball's finest catchers. Whether or not you liked or even watched baseball, you knew that Yogi was considered “an American treasure”.
What stood out however beyond his amazing baseball stats, his service to our country on the beaches of Normandy, and his larger than life fan club, was his vibrant personality and his knack for pioneering his famous and often repeated quotes. Yogi’s quips about life are displayed in Bartlett’s Famous Quotations. People labeled them “Yogi-isms”.
The quote often repeated happens to be one that is quite appropriate upon the news of his recent death. Yogi remarked, “It ain’t over 'til it’s over”! And yes, sadly, it’s now officially over.
Another Yogi-ism “You should always go to other people’s funerals, otherwise, they won’t come to yours” – is a fitting comment for this moment in time. His funeral service overflowed with family members, friends and fellow baseball mates gathered to celebrate everything about Yogi's long and remarkable life. At age 90, Yogi probably attended many funerals prior to his own.
According to the Associated Press, Yogi’s wife once asked him where he wanted to be buried…in St. Louis, New York or Montclair. “I don’t know”, he said. “Why don’t you surprise me?” His wife Carmen did not get her chance to “surprise “ Yogi as she passed away in 2014. So the details and plans for his funeral service were left to his children to decide how best to honor him. His wishes to be surprised were honored.
One of his sons, Dale, remarked that his dad was “called up to heaven after a few weeks of kneeling in the on-deck circle of life.” Those words carry a lasting image and fond memory of a man who spent his lifetime playing baseball. Yogi’s warm nature, his joyful personality, and his quotable quotes will be remembered for years to come.
It may be over Yogi, but your wishes were not forgotten.
